Transfer to Greenshade

Cinnamon Bun

Transfer to Greenshade marks a decisive institutional reversal in Broccoli Bunch’s early adventuring career. What begins as a threatened expulsion from the Exploration Guild becomes a relocation: Mathide rejects Broccoli as too weak, too inexperienced, and potentially dangerous, while Amaryllis Albatross openly defends the human who saved her life. Abraham Bristlecone’s compromise preserves Broccoli’s connection to the Guild without forcing her to remain under a branch leadership that has already treated her admission as a liability.

The Crisis Inside the Guild

The confrontation follows a period in which Broccoli has already demonstrated usefulness in ways the Guild’s formal categories do not easily recognize. Her Cleaning skill is recorded at Rank F with 90 percent progress, and Cleaning magic has destroyed a ghost that physically attacked her. She has also survived contact with the Wonderland Dungeon Core and an Evil Root, negotiated a honey exchange with pixies, endured unfamiliar food during camp life, and completed a flower-gathering quest for Dylan. Her encounters with a bored Grenoil Fencer and a bored Grenoil Hunter at Rockstack, an attentive Grenoil City Guard, and the Guild’s official expedition paperwork place her within the practical machinery of adventuring, even while her low level and unusual class continue to make her appear anomalous.

The immediate dispute concerns the legitimacy of her membership. Rainnewt had accepted Broccoli without following the proper channels and had arranged the missions connected with her work. By the time the crisis comes to a head, Rainnewt is missing, and his irregular decision has become evidence against Broccoli rather than merely an administrative error. The Guild’s anxiety is sharpened by the fact that its own expedition system is supposed to operate through documents, procedures, and designated branches: the official summary for Expedition No. 124 of Year 398PC, Port-Royal Branch, defines the mission as exploring, scouting, and mapping the region around decommissioned Fort Froger before returning to a meeting point. Broccoli’s practical achievements therefore collide with an institution increasingly concerned with authorization and suspicion.

The Attempted Expulsion

Amaryllis returns to the lounge wearing a smug grin, while Gabriel appears to need a stronger drink and Mathide seems close to losing her temper. Mathide orders Gabriel to give Broccoli a coin purse containing standard mission pay and then show her out. The gesture is administrative as well as punitive: Broccoli is to be compensated for completed work, but compensation is presented as a substitute for belonging.

Mathide’s stated reason is blunt. Broccoli is described as a liability who should never have been admitted. Her level is too low, her class appears unsuitable for Guild work, and the atmosphere of suspicion makes it, in Mathide’s view, safer to remove a possible infiltrator than to retain her. The accusation does not erase Broccoli’s actions; instead, it reclassifies them. Saving Amaryllis, completing missions, using Cleaning magic against hostile ghosts, and helping in dangerous environments no longer function as proof of membership. They become accomplishments performed by someone the institution does not know how to place.

The crisis also reveals the asymmetry between formal authority and lived experience. Mathide speaks from the position of branch leadership, while Broccoli is still trying to understand what is happening and raises her hand before asking for an explanation. Her uncertainty is not presented as proof of guilt. It exposes how quickly institutional decisions can move beyond the person they affect. Broccoli had wanted to join the Guild, but she is prepared to leave rather than force herself into an organization that rejects her; Amaryllis, however, refuses to accept that solution.

Amaryllis’s Defense and Abraham’s Compromise

Amaryllis answers the expulsion threat by making Broccoli’s value personal and concrete: Broccoli saved her life. She declares that if Broccoli cannot remain in the Guild, she will leave as well. This transforms a dispute over one provisional member into a challenge to the branch’s treatment of its own expedition partner. Amaryllis’s defense is especially significant because her position is not merely sentimental. She has firsthand knowledge of Broccoli under danger, whereas Mathide is judging her through level, class, and procedural suspicion.

Mathide tries to prevent Amaryllis from following Broccoli out, invoking Amaryllis’s parents. Amaryllis counters that they will hear about the Guild’s incompetence and identifies Broccoli as the only person who actually managed to help her. Her loyalty reverses the expected hierarchy. The Guild may possess the power to issue memberships and dismissals, but Amaryllis treats friendship and demonstrated courage as stronger grounds for trust than rank or paperwork.

Abraham Bristlecone then offers a practical escape from the impasse. He is already heading west toward Greenshade and can take both girls with him, leaving them at the Guild branch there. Greenshade is presented as distant from Trenten, reachable without crossing the desert or swimming the sea, and therefore sufficiently separate to defuse the immediate conflict. Mathide accepts the arrangement despite her earlier opposition, noting that the branch is smaller but still has work available. The compromise does not vindicate Rainnewt’s irregular admission or repair the original branch’s distrust; it relocates the problem while giving Broccoli another institutional path.

Departure and Narrative Consequences

Broccoli’s transfer is not an isolated administrative move. It follows the revelation that Rainnewt’s conduct was suspect and that the person who had seemed friendly was connected to an attempted kidnapping of Amaryllis. The episode therefore changes Broccoli’s understanding of the Guild. It remains a source of missions, pay, protections, and organized exploration, but it is also vulnerable to internal suspicion, improper recruitment, and leadership decisions that punish the wrong person when authority breaks down.

The relocation also preserves the forward motion of the adventure. Abraham’s offer creates a new route west, while Amaryllis’s decision ensures that Broccoli will not travel into that uncertainty alone. Broccoli responds to the rapidly changing circumstances with nervous acceptance and genuine anticipation of adventuring with Abraham. Her reaction to Amaryllis’s defense is marked by private happiness, showing that the transfer carries emotional value as well as logistical necessity: the threatened loss of the Guild is answered by the formation of a stronger human alliance.

The event concludes with urgency rather than closure. Amaryllis says there is little time before departure and tells Broccoli that they have preparations to complete. Broccoli agrees to meet Abraham the next day, while Abraham accepts the arrangement in a friendly tone. The crisis thus ends not with Broccoli’s return to safety, but with a new threshold: rejection by one Guild branch becomes the condition for entering another region, undertaking another journey, and testing whether practical ability and chosen companionship can survive beyond the institution that first failed to recognize them.

Significance

Transfer to Greenshade crystallizes a recurring contrast between systems of classification and the evidence of action. Broccoli is evaluated through level, class, and proper channels, yet the strongest testimony in her favor is what she has done: she cleans, fights ghosts, completes quests, explores dangerous places, and saves Amaryllis. The Guild’s attempted expulsion treats irregularity as contamination; Amaryllis and Abraham treat demonstrated conduct as the basis for trust.

The event also functions as a threshold in Broccoli’s larger quest narrative. It resembles a refusal of the call only in institutional form: Broccoli is not refusing adventure, but the Guild briefly refuses her. The resulting redirection sends her toward Greenshade instead of ending her progress. Its irony is that the organization’s effort to protect itself from a suspected liability helps place Broccoli in a new network of allies and opportunities. Her path forward is not granted by unquestioned acceptance. It is secured through Amaryllis’s loyalty, Abraham’s intervention, and Broccoli’s accumulated record of useful action.
